DBN finances tertiary education infrastructure
25 January 2010
The Development Bank of Namibia (DBN) has approved a loan of N$ 20 million to the International University of Management (IUM) for the construction of its new campus in Windhoek.
DBNs loan will be used in the construction of Phase I with two more phases to follow. The new campus is built on land measuring 44,526 ha. The project will increase IUMs student intake while temporary jobs will be created during construction.
Founder Chairman and Vice Chancellor of IUM, Dr David Namwandi said the construction of new facilities was prompted by the increased demand for services rendered by IUM and the resulting increase in the student population. Dr Namwandi said, The funding from the DBN will allow us to complete the first phase of our high-tech campus in Dorado Park before the end of the year.
We have finished the groundwork and we are almost through with the fencing. The foundation for the ground floor has been laid. We just need to prepare the slab for the first floor. We expect construction on the first phase to be complete around November, he added.
He said registration for the new year commenced countrywide on 13 January. We also recently opened an office in Botswana and they were also scheduled to register students as of 13 January. The ShareWorld Open University of Malawi also offers IUM courses. Locally, IUM has also outsourced all distance studies to the Institute for Open Learning (IOL).
In addition to a range of more conventional fields of studies, IUM also offers degrees in Digital Communication Technology and a Bachelors Degree in HIV/AIDS Management, with an objective of containing the effects of the AIDS pandemic on the economy.
Dr Namwandi said the leased premise from which IUM at present operates inhibits growth. The Central Business District is not an ideal learning environment. The current Windhoek campus also does not have facilities for accommodation and extra curricular activities.
